CoinGecko lists 154 centralized crypto exchanges, while CoinMarketCap lists 227 spot exchanges. Even CoinGecko's own website shows a much larger sitewide exchange counter of 1,520. These numbers are not measuring the same thing.

Short answer: There is no verified worldwide count of unique cryptocurrency exchanges. The major trackers list hundreds of centralized venues, while decentralized exchange directories count additional protocol deployments. And the number listed says little about where trading takes place: Binance handled 42.7% of spot volume among CoinGecko's top ten centralized exchanges in Q3 2026.

At a glance

  • 154 centralized crypto exchanges are listed on CoinGecko.
  • 227 spot exchanges are tracked by CoinMarketCap, 73 more than CoinGecko's centralized directory.
  • 1,520 exchanges appear in CoinGecko's sitewide header, a broader count than its centralized directory.
  • 766 DEX entries were listed in CoinGecko's decentralized exchange directory during the research snapshot.
  • 112 derivatives exchanges were separately listed on CoinGecko.
  • $4.83 trillion in combined spot and derivatives trading volume was processed by 11 major exchanges in September 2026.
  • 42.7% of top-ten centralized spot trading volume came from Binance in Q3 2026.
  • 13.6% of spot trading volume came from DEXs in January 2026, up from 6.9% in January 2024.
  • 79 of 166 exchanges (47.6%) had verified reserve information in CoinGecko's September 2026 assessment.

CoinMarketCap's Exchange Count Exceeds CoinGecko's by 73

In the October 30 research snapshot, CoinGecko listed 154 centralized exchanges, and CoinMarketCap listed 227 spot exchanges, a difference of 73 between their reported totals.

TrackerReported listings
CoinGecko154
CoinMarketCap227
Difference between totals73

Both directories rank exchanges, but they use different systems. CoinGecko's Trust Score considers liquidity, operational scale, and other exchange-quality measures. CoinMarketCap says its ranking evaluates traffic, liquidity, trading volume, and confidence in the legitimacy of reported volume.

The headline totals do not show which exchanges appear in one directory but not the other. Doing that would require exporting both directories, matching equivalent exchange brands and products, and identifying entries found in only one.

There is another counting problem on CoinGecko itself.

CoinGecko Displays 1,520 Exchanges, but Only 154 in Its Centralized Directory

CoinGecko's sitewide navigation counter displays 1,520 exchanges, while its main centralized exchange directory reports 154.

CoinGecko countReported figure
Sitewide exchange counter1,520
Centralized exchange directory154

The larger counter is not labeled as a count of centralized exchange businesses. CoinGecko also maintains separate directories for decentralized exchanges, derivatives venues, and decentralized perpetual-futures platforms.

The public counters do not provide a fully reconciled breakdown showing how every entry contributes to the sitewide total.

That matters because quoting 1,520 as the number of centralized exchanges would contradict the same provider's more specific directory count. Neither figure can be treated as a worldwide census of independent exchange operators.

CoinGecko's 766 DEX Entries Include Multiple Versions of the Same Protocol

CoinGecko's decentralized exchange directory listed approximately 766 entries in the October 2026 research snapshot. Some entries represent different blockchain deployments of the same trading protocol.

Uniswap is one example.

DEX listingBlockchain
Uniswap V3 (Ethereum)Ethereum
Uniswap V3 (Base)Base
Uniswap V3 (Arbitrum One)Arbitrum One
Uniswap V4 (Ethereum)Ethereum

Four Uniswap listings do not mean four unrelated exchange businesses.

The directory distinguishes protocol versions and networks because they operate as separate trading deployments. That is useful for comparing decentralized liquidity and volume, but it inflates the number if the question is how many independent exchange organizations exist.

A count of DEX deployments is therefore a different statistic from a count of centralized exchange brands.

Binance Appears in Both Spot and Derivatives Directories

CoinGecko's October 2026 research snapshot included approximately 112 derivatives exchange listings alongside its centralized spot exchange directory.

Some exchange brands appear in both.

ExampleDirectory
BinanceCentralized spot exchanges
Binance (Futures)Derivatives exchanges

These are separate trading products associated with the same exchange brand.

Adding 154 centralized listings and 112 derivatives listings would produce 266, but not 266 verified independent exchange businesses. The overlapping entries would need to be identified first.

Derivatives Accounted for 84.2% of Trading Across 11 Major Exchanges

The number of exchanges and the amount of trading they handle are separate measurements.

CoinMarketCap's September 2026 report examined 11 major exchanges and recorded $4.83 trillion in combined spot and derivatives trading. Derivatives accounted for $4.06 trillion of that volume.

Trading categorySeptember 2026 volumeShare
Spot$762.7B15.8%
Derivatives$4.06T84.2%
Combined$4.83T100%

Derivatives volume was 5.33 times spot volume across the 11 exchanges.

That ratio had fallen from 6.25 in August. Spot trading volume increased 30.7% in September, while derivatives volume rose 11.4%.

These figures cover CoinMarketCap's selected exchange group. They do not represent all cryptocurrency trading worldwide.

Five Exchanges Handled 87.4% of September's Tracked Trading Volume

CoinMarketCap's September 2026 dataset also shows how concentrated trading was among its 11 exchanges.

Binance alone processed approximately $2.13 trillion, accounting for 44.03% of the total. The five largest exchanges handled 87.4% combined.

ExchangeSeptember 2026 volumeShare
Binance$2,125.6B44.03%
OKX$779.7B16.15%
Bybit$487.2B10.09%
Gate$443.6B9.19%
MEXC$382.4B7.92%

The five exchanges accounted for approximately $4.22 trillion of the $4.83 trillion recorded across the group.

The result shows substantial concentration within CoinMarketCap's selected sample. It does not establish those five exchanges' share of the entire global market.

Binance's Spot Share Rose as Top-Ten Trading Volume Fell in Q3 2026

CoinGecko's separate Q3 2026 report found that the ten largest centralized spot exchanges processed $1.65 trillion during the quarter, down 14.2% from Q2.

Binance's share nevertheless increased from 38.7% to 42.7%.

MeasureQ2 2026Q3 2026
Top-ten CEX spot volume$1.93T$1.65T
Binance share38.7%42.7%
Share change,+4 percentage points

Using the rounded quarterly figures, Binance's spot volume was approximately $705 billion in Q3. CoinGecko reported that it was the only exchange with a double-digit share of the top-ten group.

This measure differs from CoinMarketCap's September figure: it covers centralized spot trading over an entire quarter, rather than spot and derivatives trading across 11 exchanges during one month.

DEX Share of Spot Trading Nearly Doubled in Two Years

Decentralized exchanges have gained trading share even though centralized exchanges still handle most spot activity.

CoinGecko found that DEX spot market share rose from 6.9% in January 2024 to 13.6% in January 2026.

MeasureJanuary 2024January 2026
DEX share of spot volume6.9%13.6%
DEX spot trading volume$95.86B$231.29B

DEX spot volume increased approximately 141% over the period.

The report also recorded a temporary DEX market-share peak of 24.5% in June 2025, partly linked to Binance Alpha 2.0 routing transactions through PancakeSwap.

DEX share remained above 10% from January 2025 through the report's January 2026 endpoint.

The change measures where trading occurred, not how many independent decentralized exchanges launched.

More Than Half of 166 Exchanges Lacked Verified Reserve Information

Only 79 of 166 exchanges covered by CoinGecko's September 2026 reserve assessment had verified reserve information. The remaining 87, or 52.4%, had no verified reserves recorded in the assessment.

Reserve verification statusExchangesShare
Verified reserve information7947.6%
No verified reserve information recorded8752.4%
Total assessed166100%

But even verified reserves do not establish an exchange's complete financial position.

CoinGecko's own example is KuCoin. Its August 10, 2026 proof-of-reserves report covered four assets, Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, and USDC, across 38 blockchain networks. The underlying verification took place on July 31, ten days before publication.

The assessment checked reserve assets and customer liabilities within that defined scope. It did not verify every cryptocurrency traded on KuCoin or establish the exchange's overall financial health.

That is the limit of the 79-exchange figure. It records the availability of verified reserve information, not 79 exchanges passing comprehensive financial audits. The assessment was published by CoinGecko in collaboration with exchange-risk provider CORE3.

The 166 exchanges assessed in September also form a different dated population from CoinGecko's October centralized exchange directory. The two totals should not be compared as though they covered identical exchanges.

Exchange Counts That Need a Date and Definition

A crypto exchange count can be accurate when published and misleading when repeated without its original context.

160 centralized exchanges. Cryptoweek's October 15, 2026 article cited 160 CoinGecko centralized exchanges, 772 decentralized entries, and a sitewide total of 1,507. Our October 30 snapshot recorded 154, 766 and 1,520, respectively. The figures changed across the two dated observations; that does not establish that either snapshot was wrong.

1,520 exchanges. CoinGecko's sitewide counter displayed this figure on October 30, but its centralized directory listed 154. The larger count should not be presented as the number of independent centralized exchange businesses.

Neither source is necessarily wrong. The problem starts when exchange counts are repeated without their original dates or definitions.

What Nobody Publishes

The directories establish how many venues each provider tracks. They do not establish a single worldwide count of independently operating cryptocurrency exchanges.

A verified global total would require records that are not combined in any of the sources examined: unique legal operators, their brands, spot and derivatives products, decentralized protocol deployments, and current operating status.

Regulatory registers cannot fill that gap by themselves.

The European Securities and Markets Authority maintains MiCA authorization records for crypto-asset service providers within the European regulatory framework. Those records concern legal authorization, not a worldwide count of exchange brands. One entity may operate several services, and exchanges may need separate permissions in different jurisdictions.

Exchange directories also cannot establish how many unique people use crypto exchanges. An individual can hold accounts on several platforms, and a trading account is not necessarily active.

Nor do the figures measure how many exchange customers use crypto casinos or how much cryptocurrency moves from exchanges to gambling platforms. Those require separate transaction and customer datasets.

How Many Crypto Exchanges Are There? Quick Answers

How many centralized crypto exchanges are there?

CoinGecko tracked 154 centralized crypto exchanges on October 30, 2026, while CoinMarketCap tracked 227 spot exchanges. Neither directory provides a verified worldwide count of unique exchange businesses.

How many decentralized crypto exchanges are there?

CoinGecko's October 2026 research snapshot contained approximately 766 decentralized exchange entries. Some represented different deployments or versions of the same protocol, so the figure is not a count of independent companies.

Which crypto exchange has the most trading volume?

Binance led both datasets examined. It held 42.7% of trading volume among CoinGecko's top ten centralized spot exchanges in Q3 2026 and 44.03% of combined spot and derivatives volume across CoinMarketCap's 11 selected exchanges in September. Neither figure is a share of all cryptocurrency trading worldwide.

How many crypto exchanges have verified proof of reserves?

CoinGecko reported verified reserve information for 79 of 166 exchanges in September 2026, or 47.6%. Verification may cover only selected assets and a specific point in time, rather than the exchange's complete financial position.

What Sits Behind This

The exchange counts come from CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap's public directories, checked on October 30, 2026. Trading-volume figures come from CoinGecko's Q3 2026 and CEX/DEX reports and CoinMarketCap's September 2026 monthly exchange report. We calculated selected percentage differences and shares from published figures. We did not independently audit exchange-reported volume, match every exchange across providers, or produce a deduplicated global census.

Both CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap are commercial cryptocurrency data providers. Their ranking systems, directory coverage, and data collection methods are not identical. CoinGecko's proof-of-reserves article was written in collaboration with CORE3, a provider of exchange risk assessments. A reserve verification is not the same as a comprehensive audit, and a directory listing is not proof of legal authorization. Our count of how many cryptocurrencies there are draws on the same two directories. If you find an error or a better primary dataset, let us know so we can review it and publish a dated correction.
